Software developers have been creating helpful chess playing software programs and apps since the late 1970’s and some of the best chess players have been utilising these software programs and apps ever since in order to improve their skills which is likely one of the secrets to their success along with hard work and dedication to their craft. These software programs can assist with tasks such as analysing chess games and providing helpful feedback on areas of improvement as well as your strengths as a chess player, enabling chess players to improve their ability to identify an opponent’s blunders and mistakes via built in feedback tools and chess puzzles, improving chess players time management skills by playing in time controlled chess matches and much more.

As technology has developed throughout the decades many of these software programs and apps have seen massive improvements enabling chess players to accomplish much more than what was previously possible. Many of the software programs and apps today have surpassed the greatest chess players of our time in terms of their understanding of chess and their ability to play chess and have achieved outstandingly high Elo ratings as a result. Software programs such as Stockfish, Komodo, Shredder, Rybka and Houdini have achieved Elo ratings of over 3000 and are able to play chess at the Grandmaster level and beyond. The highest rated human chess player is currently Magnus Carlsen who has an Elo rating of over 2800 and many believe it’s unlikely that he will be able to significantly increase his Elo rating due to a lack of human opponents with an Elo rating within this range however this feat may be possible with the help of the computers.
